What's New in the 2026 Knockout Format
The FIFA World Cup 2026 introduces a historic format change. For the first time, 48 teams compete — up from 32 — meaning the knockout bracket now starts with a Round of 32 instead of the traditional Round of 16. This adds 16 extra matches and gives more nations a chance to advance deep into the tournament. The bracket structure is strictly single-elimination from the Round of 32 onward.
