The Expanded 48-Team World Cup

FIFA World Cup 2026 is the first tournament to feature 48 national teams — a 50% increase from the 32 teams that competed at every World Cup from 1998 to 2022. This historic expansion means more nations compete, more confederations receive additional slots, and the group stage now features 12 groups instead of 8. The three host nations (USA, Canada, Mexico) received automatic qualification, with the remaining 45 spots distributed through continental qualifying campaigns.
